Sector Overview

Livestock and fisheries are critical pillars of South Sudan’s economy and livelihoods.

South Sudan has an estimated livestock population of more than 11 million cattle, 12 million goats, and 12 million sheep, making it one of the most livestock-rich countries in Africa. Livestock contributes significantly to household income, food security, cultural practices, and economic activities across the country.

The fisheries sector supports approximately 2.7 million people through employment, food supply, and income generation. South Sudan’s rivers, lakes, wetlands, and the Sudd ecosystem contain over 100 fish species and possess significant potential for sustainable fisheries production and aquaculture development.

Despite this enormous potential, the sector faces challenges including limited infrastructure, animal diseases, inadequate veterinary services, low levels of investment, weak market systems, post-harvest losses, and climate-related pressures. The Ministry is working with stakeholders to address these challenges and unlock the sector’s full potential.
